Do you set goals at the beginning of the year? Do you end up accomplishing those goals? Have you ever decided new year, new me, this will be the year I start eating healthy and exercising? How about setting a savings goal, have you wanted to save a certain amount of money every paycheck to save up for a vacation or a new toy? Did you save the amount you wanted or did you put it on a credit card? There are a lot of goals and destinations we think of but how many of them do we truly reach..
The 12 week year tries to help assist with this issue. Instead of setting year long goals at the beginning of the year, then praying it all works out. The 12 week year has you set long term, 10year, 3 year, and 1 year goals for the person you want to become. Then you break those goals down into 12 week goals, then weekly steps, down to daily tasks. By spending the time to do all this front end work, you make a roadmap to bring you on the journey to your destination. Without the steps and tasks, what are you doing to bring you closer to your destination.
What I have realized as I have tried setting goals for myself and watching other people set goals. They do not or I do not enjoy the process, I am looking for an outcome, without wanting to put in the work. Contrarily, on the goals I set where I am disciplined and write down my tasks, I may not enjoy the tasks I am doing, I may not look forward to doing the tasks but, when they are complete, I feel great! The feeling I get when accomplishing something because I was disciplined to do so, is an empowering feeling, which makes me love the process.
Its just like going to the gym. I have been lifting weights and exercising for 14 years now. There are many days when I do not want to go workout, including this morning. However, it is written down on my task list for the day, so, I went to the gym. Now its 745am, I got a workout in, I have been hydrating, and now I am able to write a blog all before 8am hits. There are more days then not, where I do not want to go to the gym but I go anyways. It is discipline which gets me there and nothing else. The same goes for my diet, I would love to eat fast food everyday, I used to do it when I was younger. However, I know the negative health risks associated with that. So, I meal prep twice a week with Sam, so we have meals for the week. I have been meal prepping since I was 18. It is discipline that gets us to cook our food every Sunday and Wednesday. Since we do this, we love the journey. We love the way our bodies feel, we love how we perform, we love how we look, all because we enjoy the process of accomplishing our tasks we set out.
Remember, you do not have to love the task but you need to love accomplishing the task. If you can love accomplishment, you will love the process, which is the most important part. Set your destination but make sure you make a process to reach your destination. The journey is what takes a long time, so you really want to enjoy that. The destination is short lived, so do not hate your journey to try and get an hour of happiness by reaching your destination.
Fall in love with accomplishment and you will fall in love with the journey.
