Knowing Yourself

There is only one person you are guaranteed to spend the rest of your life with. Do you think, if you are going to spend the rest of your life with that person, you should get to know them? Well, that person is yourself and you should really get to know who you are.

There are a lot of people in the world who you are going to come in contact with. A lot of these people will have similar beliefs as you and a whole lot are going to have different beliefs than you. Some people are going to have massive ambition, some are going to lack any ambition. Some people may want to work a 9-5 and spend their evening with their kids, some people may want to travel the world in a van and be a nomad. So, you need to be careful how you are letting these people influence your thoughts and behaviors.

There is the saying, I am sure everyone has heard a thousand times, “you are the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with.” I cannot stress how true this is, the people you hang around with, will influence the type of person you are. You should take an analysis of the people you spend the most time with and ask yourself if you want to be like those people. If the answer is yes, awesome, keep doing what you’re doing. If the answer is no, you should really reflect on why you spend so much time with them, and what you can do to pivot your main group of people.

I have been reading “Your Next Five Moves: Master the Art of Business Strategy” by Patrick Bet David, with Greg Dinkin. In the book they talk about studying yourself and how its the greatest thing you can do. If you know who you are, if you know what you want in life, you can be the master of your soul. You will not envy others, you will try to keep up with the Joneses, you will not have jealousy if someone you know or see has more than you. The reason being, you know what you want and WHY you want it. Then you can live your life based on your terms not someone else’s.

This has been a goal of my for quite sometime. I have done a lot of self-reflection and vision work over the past 3 years. I am far from knowing myself but I continue to work on it. I think I have a pretty good understanding, but there are a lot more steps along the path, I need to conquer. By continuing to study myself, I can work towards the life I want, not the life someone has tried to influence me to want.

Have you ever noticed when you try to help someone who is doing something you deem wrong. They are not willing to change their habits until they decide they want to. You are the same way, you will float around doing whatever you want, keeping any of the bad habits you have, until you decide what you want in life and WHY you want it.

Spend time studying yourself and see what you are able to learn.
