I was talking with my friend Marty last week. We were talking about sports and I told him I was not having much fun golfing this year. I told him I either need to start golfing a lot more or a lot less. That is when he asked me what I was trying to do with golf. I asked, “like what is my goal with golf?” He said yea, I did not have an answer. Then he explained to me why he swims 3 days a week. He is training to be a top 10 triathlon athlete in WI, in the next 3 years.
He was previously a professional runner, so he has that part down. Now he is working on getting the swimming down. He said you should think about why you are doing something, otherwise, you can be conflicted with why you are doing it. He said it can be just for fun, but then do not get upset if you are not doing well. However, if you want to be good at it, you need to set goals, get coaching, and execute consistently. This really got me thinking about why I do a lot of the stuff I do.
It is easy to do things just to do things. It is harder to ask yourself, why am I doing this? Better yet, what am I trying to accomplish with this? If you start asking yourself those questions, you can show up and perform based on the answers. Then you can start doing things with purpose behind them.
Next time you are doing something, ask yourself why you are doing it and what you are trying to accomplish by doing it. It may help you enjoy yourself more or get clarity on what you truly want.
