Are you stressed out? Does life seem to be controlling you instead of you controlling your life? Well you’re not alone, there are tons of people in the world who feel helpless! The question is, are you going to throw in the towel like the rest of them or are you going to do something to gain control of your life? If you want to take back control, it is a simple process but it is not an easy process.
You need to persevere and you do so by setting up wins. It all starts with setting a little goal and accomplishing it. So, lately my goal has been cold showers in the morning. First thing I do when I wake up is turn on the cold water and hop in the shower for 3 minutes. It is not enjoyable but what it is doing is starting my day off with a win. If I can get up and handle something like that, later in the day, when things get stressful, I will be better fit to handle those issues. The reason being is, I told myself something I would do, then I do the task, which reinforces with myself that I am in charge of my life. My buddy AJ taught me this, he has been doing it for years and he has convinced me to do it myself.
The more I do this, the more I have kept promises with myself. When I can trust myself to do the things I say I will, I will be able to handle stressors better. So, starting with any small tasks to start getting wins, is the first step. Once we build these little habits and we believe ourselves when we say something, then we can start adding more challenging tasks. These challenging tasks will build mental toughness and fortitude to conquer harder challenges in life. Such as the cold shower or a cold bath. If you can get up and hop in a cold shower right away (which is miserable), later in the day, you will laugh at some of the precipitating factors people are stressing over.
I remember after Ryan and I were in business a few years and we put in countless hours of work, some of our employees would tell us their problems they were having. Ryan and I used to tell them they need a harder life because those things should not be on their radar as stressors. A lot of us need to do harder things, so things that normally stress people out, we laugh at.
This whole process is about gaining self-confidence. By keeping promises with ourselves, stacking wins, we stack momentum. This is what builds our tolerance for stressful environments. The more challenging of tasks we ask of ourselves and complete, the harder the stressors we are able to overcome. Always Persevere!
