Do you ever look at high performers and wonder how they stay so motivated? Where do they get all this motivation to keep executing day after day, especially on tasks they do not want to do? I used to think this growing up, where do these people get the motivation to get so much accomplished. Then as I started doing more things myself and started listening to high achievers, I found out the answer.
The answer is, they don’t.. They do not have motivation all the time, they have discipline. They do not want to get up at 6am and go workout but they do it anyways. They do not want to go to work and do sales calls for hours, but they do it anyways. They do not want to go to the networking event after work, but they do it anyways. Most people are inherently lazy and want to relax with any down time they have. People tend to think the individuals who keep executing do not get lazy, the truth is, they use discipline and resort to auto-pilot.
I heard a quote one time about self control. It went something like this, self control is not being strong in times of temptation. Self control is setting boundaries in place during times of strength, so in times of weakness, you won’t be tempted.
This quote has translated into multiple realms in my life. Especially motivation and discipline. I use motivation to identify habits I will need in times of laziness, to stay disciplined and execute on my tasks. So, when I am lazy, I know what I need to do to continue progressing.
So, how do you get the things done, you want to get done, when you do not have any motivation? Maybe a better question is, how do you get the motivation to do something when you have run out of it? You utilized discipline through habits. These habits you formed and built in times of strength and motivation. These are what carry you through the tough times. By continuing your habits and staying disciplined, you gain momentum, this momentum will give you more motivation, since you keep crushing your goals.
It is okay if you miss a day and you fed into temptations of being lazy. The important thing is identifying when you have done this and get back on track the next day.
Stay disciplined and you can achieve anything you set your mind to!
