Picking your first job can set the tone for your work ethic for the foreseeable future. The environment at your job can either teach you positive or negative work behaviors. This is why, it is important to choose your job wisely.
When you first start out in the workforce, you want to have good mentors and a good environment to build your work ethic. With these types of role models, you will be able to emulate their good behaviors. The more time you spend in environments like that, the better worker and person you will be. If you build a good work ethic, it is a skill employers will always be in high demand for. Working hard and being around these positive people is one of the best skills you can develop as you progress in life and move into a career.
I have discussed before on blogs and podcasts, the difference between a job and a career. A job is something you do to get started in life. A job is something to pay the bills and get you along until you can find a career (long-term position/job that you are passionate about). You are building your work ethic and skillset to prepare you for your career in the future. This is why it is paramount to your future, to choose the proper jobs early on in your life to prepare you for later on. However, sometimes, we choose the wrong job, and start to develop negative behaviors.
What do you do if you have had these bad jobs that have taken away your work ethic? Start fresh, start looking for a new job where you will be able to start developing the skill set of hard work. The more you are around people trying to better themselves and their company, the easier it will be to build your discipline at work. Stay away from the gossip and negative Nancy talk and befriend the positive, hard workers.
You will spend more time at work than anywhere else in life. Make sure it is a positive experience, not a negative one. If you are spending 40 hours a week miserable, most likely this is going to drag into your personal life, causing you to be unhappy and negative for the majority of your life.
Encourage others and keep in mind, the importance of picking a job to develop a good work ethic!
