In the past, present and I am sure the future, I have dealt with people that don’t seem to pull their weight. I will say, there are times where I am not the best either, but overall I try to finish all my tasks and plus some. Could I do more? Absolutely! But there are times when I think why should I, if that person doesn’t? Here is why I think we should.
As a leader, we need to show that we have a high standard and what better way to show it then by doing it yourself! Recently, I have been thinking about how I can bring up to someone that they have been slacking or that they need to have higher standards. My only issue is that I don’t quite feel comfortable doing that if I’m not giving all that I can as well. So, I have created a mental action plan, that I will write down and write goal dates next to for myself.
By going about it this way, I can track how long it takes me to do some of the tasks or projects that I want to get done. I need to start holding myself at a higher standard with measurable proof. So, one or two months down the road, I will have 1. gotten more of my things done, 2. have proof of what I have done in the time and how high my standard is.
Why is this important? Because, you don’t want to give the other person any reason to come back at you for your actions. So easily can we try to reprimand someone, but if we dropped the ball on something else they will throw it in your face quickly. If we do our best for a month or two, then they won’t have any backlash towards you and hopefully take your allegations more seriously and start improving themselves.
No matter what position you are in in a company, I believe that we can all do better. Make sure you give yourself goals that are trackable and track what you have done. If you are a lower level employee, it makes it much easier to bring this to a superior to get a raise or a promotion. Or if you are higher up in a company, by holding a higher standard for yourself, your employees should follow you. If they don’t, then they probably not the best people to have working for you anyways. If we work with higher standard employees, you yourself will improve by at least 10% naturally. Can you imagine what that could do for a business if everyone was doing that?
The possibilities are endless, but it all starts with your actions and holding yourself to a higher standard and tracking it.
